WASMO's Information, Education and
Communication drives target rural communities, particularly
women and children. WASMO and Implementation Support Agencies (ISAs)
organise programmes in project area villages that spread
awareness as to why cleanliness, women's empowerment, health and
hygiene are important. These messages are spread through posters,
wall paintings, competitions, brochures and pamphlets. (See IEC
Materials) |

WASMO also uses the electronic media to
get its messages across. WASMO sponsors weekly radio programme
such as Gaam jo Choro and Hariyalu Gujarat. It also organises
talk shows on All India Radio dealing with issues concerning
local communities, water and sanitation. A one hour programme is
also broadcast during the annual padyatra to the Mata na Madh temple
that is part of the Navratri festival. A number of radio and
television jingles on various aspects of community mobilisation,
water and sanitation are also broadcast regularly throughout Gujarat. |

WASMO takes part in annual fairs and
exhibitions, organises street plays, especially on the model of
the traditional folk theatre called lok dayro. The subjects
range from personal hygiene and health to environmental
sanitation and the role of the pani samitis. These plays can
lead to changes in attitude, resulting in better hygiene practices
and willingness to contribute to operation and maintenance
funds. School
sanitation and hygiene education:
School sanitation and hygiene education enhances the adoption of
hygienic practices by schoolchildren and promotes a healthy
environment. As a part of this endeavour, sanitation corners and
drinking water facilities are set up in schools.

Campaign in Dwarka |
| |
|
Dwarka is one of India's major Hindu
pilgrimage centres. It is considered to be one of the four dhams
(divine abodes) that mark the spiritual boundaries of the
country. A massive number of pilgrims and tourists from
throughout India and abroad visit this spot, situated in
Jamnagar district, every year. In 2002-03, almost 900 thousand
people visited Dwarka. Such a high number of visitors puts a
great strain on the city's water and sanitation facilities. As a
part of the "Year of Urban Development" celebrations in 2005,
Dwarka is now being developed as a model to demonstrate the role
of sanitation in attaining a higher quality of life. WASMO has
proposed to establish a demonstration centre offering clean
drinking water and sanitation facilities for visitors. These
include eco-sanitation, a waste water disposal system, a solid
waste management system, roof-top rainwater harvesting
structures, sanitation sankul, and a bathing ghat. |
