Water Resource Management: enhancing
drinking water security

Village meeting facilitated by ISA

Village meeting facilitated by ISA

The primary objectives of the ERR Project are:

1.

Restoring drinking water supply in all earthquake-affected villages by establishing community owned, demand-driven water supply and sanitation systems operated and managed by the local community

2.

Integrating traditional and contemporary water storage and supply systems to enhance drinking water security and to promote water resource management

3.

Building and empowering effective village level institutions that include women and representatives from all groups to manage these systems

4.

Promoting personal hygiene and environmental sanitation

The success of the project depends upon the extent of community participation in the planning, implementation, operation and management stages. WASMO and the Implementation Support Agencies (ISAs) have been actively engaged in community mobilisation through campaigns and capacity building and developing people's institutions to facilitate decentralised decision-making. It is vital that village-level institutions are suitably equipped and empowered to develop and manage their own water resources, although the project makes use of bulk water transfer through the Narmada Canal as a back-up.
