Implementation Support Agencies in the Ghogha Project

Centre for Environment Education (CEE)

Established in 1984, CEE is supported by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, and is affiliated to the Nehru Foundation for Development, Ahmedabad. Its primary objective is to improve public awareness and understanding of environmental issues with a view to promote the conservation and wise use of nature and natural resources. CEE is a national institute engaged in developing programmes and materials to increase awareness about the environment. Under the Ghogha Project, the CEE was responsible for 28 villages in the Talaja and Ghogha talukas.

Medhavi

Medhavi is a non-government organisation registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 and the Bombay Public Charitable Trust Act 1950. Besides its own Board of Trustees, Medhavi is guided and supported by its Board of Advisors comprising eminent persons from various fields like watershed development, economics, industry, health, education and sports. Prior to the project, Medhavi was already active in the Bhavnagar district. Medhavi was responsible for 29 villages in Bhavnagar and Ghogha talukas.

Utthan

Utthan is an NGO established in 1981. Its work has evolved over a period of 20 years and is spread across four districts in Gujarat covering 108 villages in the coastal and tribal areas of the state. Utthan’s activities are focused on the local environment and community needs and are consciously designed to encourage community participation. This principle ensures that equal opportunity is provided to marginalised sections, particularly women and vulnerable groups to participate in the decision making processes, ensuring their access to natural resources and empowering them through capacity building. When it joined the Ghogha project as an ISA, Utthan was already working in the area under its watershed programme. It was made responsible to provide support to 25 villages in Bhavnagar, Ghogha and Talaja talukas.
