WASMO believes that drinking water
management should be demand-driven and community managed. One of
its main thrusts is the construction and maintenance of
village level water supply infrastructure such as underground
sumps, elevated storage reservoirs, stand-posts, pipelines,
bathing and washing facilities and cattle troughs. In addition,
both traditional and other existing structures such as open
wells and tubewells are recharged and
rejuvenated utilising local knowledge. Rainwater harvesting is
an important component by which local supply sources are
recharged. These local sources are supplemented by bulk transfer
of water from water surplus south Gujarat to water deficient
north Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch through canal and pipeline
systems. The Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB) and
Gujarat Water Infrastructure Limited (GWIL) are involved in the
bulk transfer of water from the Mahi and Sardar Sarovar canals.
The GWSSB also establishes water treatment and filtration plants
all over the state to treat and chlorinate water before it
reaches the village sumps. |
