Newsletter

WASMO publishes Loksamvaad, a quarterly newsletter in Gujarati. The purpose of the newsletter is to engage the local communities in permanent dialogue on water and sanitation issues. The first issue Loksamvaad of was published in June 2004. The newsletter has a circulation of about 20,000.

Loksamvaad is an integral part of WASMO’s IEC strategy and its specific objectives are:

To educate and inform people about the prevailing situation in the water and sanitation sector, primarily at local level but also at national and international levels.

To provide a platform for local communities to share their experiences.

Through this newsletter, WASMO tries to convey to its target audience that:

Efforts at attaining water security should be seen as an opportunity rather than a problem.

Water and sanitation should be seen together rather than separately.

All the concerned stakeholders should see beyond water and sanitation. The ultimate aim is to build the communities’ own confidence and make them believe in their own capacity.

The editors of Loksamvaad try to ensure that it becomes a people’s medium rather than the mouthpiece of WASMO. Hence contributions are sought from the people themselves apart from sector experts.

WASMO is clear that the target audience will include those who can understand, value and share the information provided in Loksamvaad with other community members. Typically the readers of the newsmagazine include Gram Panchayat and Pani Samiti members, members of community based organisations, school principals, teachers, librarians, women leaders, GO-NGOs in the development sector etc. Its readership is not restricted to rural areas alone but also includes small townships which are frequented by the neighbouring villagers.

Loksamvaad carries in its issues articles on the water scenario in Gujarat, the community based approach adopted by WASMO, community initiatives, information on sanitation and health, water resources management, water conservation and management, school sanitation etc. It also carries articles with best practices, lessons drawn from projects in other countries, government resolutions, guidance on different aspects of drinking water supply and sanitation and useful contacts. Feedback from its readers is highly appreciated.

Loksamvaad is published for educational purposes only and has restricted circulation. If you wish to receive Loksamvaad, on a regular basis please contact our Documentation and Communication Unit at the following address:
