The Vebhapur village
Pani Samiti
strongly believes in helping itself.
Vebhapur, with a population of 3,788, is about 30 km away from
Jamnagar district headquarters. The village suffered from
serious drinking water shortages. Only around 50 per cent of the
households had access to safe drinking water. The others
depended on tankers.
In November the Sector Reforms Scheme (State) programme was
introduced in the village. Then there was no stopping them. The
Pani Samiti
was formed according to guidelines. Surveys were conducted with
technical support from line departments. The Village Action Plan
was prepared and submitted to the DWSC and approved. The scheme
cost Rs 12.24 lakh. The requisite 10 per cent (Rs 1.22 lakh) was
contributed by 77 per cent of the 715 households.
On approval, the Samiti
decided to implement construction themselves since they felt
that they were the best implementers to ensure quality. Suitable
training on technical and financial issues, material purchasing
and construction supervision were provided by the DWSC.
Construction began on December 20, 2004. Three and a half km of
distribution lines, repair of existing sump, pump house and
pumping machinery are already complete.
Bursting with enthusiasm, this confident
Pani Samiti plans
to provide technical and financial training to
Pani Samiti
members of other villages involved in the programme. |
