Partnerships

WASMO offers an opportunity and invites individuals/ organisations to contribute their might in making villages a better place to live in by ensuring safe and assured supply of drinking water throughout the year; and thus making scarcity of drinking water a thing of past. All of us have always been receivers. Now the time has come to pay back to the society. We can contribute in the process of enhancing the overall quality of life of the village people by giving our full support to programmes being implemented by the state government. WASMO would facilitate the process of enabling the village to have water supply system of their own choice, constructed and managed by them, making the contributors proud of the same.

WASMO maintains a network with a large number of partners who play different roles and contribute to the overall cause of the sector. See partners for a profile of our partners and their contributions. You too could become one of our valuable  partners if you belong to any of the following categories:

Non-resident Gujarati

The Gujarati diaspora (NRGs) has always maintained relations with Gujarat, contributed to the development of the place of their origin and championed many causes. Normally, the economic contribution of the diaspora can be in four forms: remittances sent by the non-residents to their relatives, charitable donations, aid ear-marked for the development of infrastructure, and investment in the economy. With Gujarat now poised for a double-digit growth rate, further economic contribution and assistance from Non Resident Gujaratis will give even greater boost to the macro economy of Gujarat. While donations have been quite substantial to educational causes and social orgnaisations, they have been rather modest towards rural infrastructure. Systematic infrastructure aid by NRGs can play a significant role in filling certain missing gaps, especially in rural areas.

WASMO provides NRGs the opportunity to join the cause of ensuring drinking water security and improving sanitation facilities in their area of interest and thus help enhance the standard of living of rural communities.

Some of the areas wherein one can join hands with the state are:

Contribution to the cost of water supply

Supply of safe drinking water at the doorstep of the villager is not cheap because of the water treatment, pumping and other costs. The average cost of the water supply in rural areas comes to about Rs. 30 per person per annum. To make the system sustainable a part of this cost would be recovered from the users. Co-sharing these costs for villages would help the ongoing decentralised, community-managed water supply programme.

Contribution to capital cost of setting up in-village water supply systems

Since in-village infrastructure for drinking water and sanitation is being developed for each village, one can adopt any village and provide financial assistance to it through WASMO. WASMO would ensure that the entire fund reaches the Gram Panchayat/ Pani Samiti and the village people themselves plan and construct in-village water supply and environmental sanitation systems. WASMO would provide the technical and management support. The cost of the in-village system varies from Rs. 7 lakh to Rs. 40 lakh, depending on the size of the village and efficacy of the system already in place.

Contribution to capital cost of treatment/ filtration plants

One could further supplement the efforts in the drinking water sector by sharing the cost of setting up of treatment and filtration plants for a group of villages. This will enable people to have access to treated water drawn from local sources throughout the year. The cost of filtration and treatment of water is about Rs. 6 lakh per million litres per day (MLD) and these plants range from 4 MLD to 40 MLD in size.

Contribution to capital cost of regional water supply systems

Groups of individuals, associations, organisations and institutions can join hands with Government and contribute by taking a share in the cost of supplying water to a cluster of villages in the region of their choice. These regional water supply systems would provide safe and assured drinking water supply to the villages. The cost of setting up of such regional water supply systems ranges from Rs. 10 crore to 40 crore, depending on the number of villages, area, population, etc.

Sharing capital cost in improvement of sanitation facilities

The present situation prevailing in respect of the hygiene and sanitation practices of the rural people in the country is not very satisfactory resulting in health burden. In rural Gujarat almost 78% of households do not have any form of latrines. Construction of basic latrines have shown very positive results on communities such as a reduced incidence of diarrhoea, lowered expenditure on medical treatment, increased school attendance rates and improved safety and dignity for women who no longer need to defecate in open fields. Co-sharing cost of construction of latrines (Rs. 1000 for the construction of a toilet platform consisting of a trap, pipe and flooring) can go a long way in advancing the Total Sanitation Campaign and improve living conditions of rural communities.
